No more sleeping- and buffet cars on Hungarian State Railways international trains

MÁV-Start is terminating the buffet- and sleeping cars from December 10 (this is when the 2017-2018 schedule starts). MÁV-Start told MTI on Monday that the decision had to be made for the sake of economic operation.  According to the briefing, the transport service has suffered great losses in the recent years, especially in 2016. Because of this, the company examined the usage of the international routes, how much income these routes make, and finally decided to cut back on some services.

The changes affect some international routes, which will run without the buffet- and sleeping cars from the schedule change in December, along with the Metropol EuroNight routes, which will only go to Prague instead of Berlin. According to MÁV-Start’s statement, the changes do not affect the Adria, Beograd, Dacia, Hungária, Kálmán Imre, Varsovia and Wiener Walzer international routes.

Forty Stadler-KISS double decker electric trains will be deployed on Hungarian rails in the spring of 2019 It was first leaked in the middle of August that the company plans to review the unprofitable catering department. At that point, there were rumours, that the trade union is afraid of layoff. However, MÁV stated that those employees who’ve lost their jobs as a result of the reorganization will be asked to participate in retraining, as there is a great shortage of railmen.
